Architectural Heritage Series: Doors Throughout History

Access and security are still basic functions of doors, but not all doors were or are equal. Door technology has evolved tremendously over time, from simple to elaborate and plain to decorative. Journey the historic transformation of doors with Steve Stuckey, former architectural conservator of George Washington’s Mount Vernon home and now executive director and architectural conservator for The Tower Heritage Center.

This exciting session will dive into the change in the construction methods of doors over the last few centuries. The discussion will cover joinery, fasteners used, common finishes and finish techniques, and a brief hardware overview. Images, drawings, and physical examples will be used throughout the session.
